Drivers from across the globe showed their stuff at the first international karting event for people with disabilities.

ParaKart proved, without a doubt, that drivers with disabilities are just as competitive as their able-bodied counterparts.
Called ParaKart, the race in The Algarve, Portugal, was the brainchild of David Player, managing director and founder of Wheeling Around The Algarve (www.player.pt), a company that specializes in accessible holiday facilities in The Algarve, in southern Portugal.
"I approached the owner of the local karting track to ask if he'd agree to fit hand controls on a couple of his karts," Player says. "It took some persuading, but finally he agreed, and shortly after that I entered a team of three disabled and three able-bodied drivers in the Ayrton Senna Trophy."
In the January 2003 SPORTS 'N SPOKES, read about the hand-controlled karts, the drivers, and the race—destined to become one of the top-level motorsports events in the world.
