Racing:
21st Oita International Wheelchair Marathon
On November 6, 2001, the U.S. delegation—11 team members and two assistants—began its journey to Japan. On November 9, we awoke to an international meal shared with 462 wheelers representing 29 countries from around the world. "The Man," Heinz Frei from Switzerland, won the marathon in 1:22:20. Saul Mendoza (Mexico) was second (1:29:37), and Joel Jeannot (France) came in third with 1:29:37 as well. The closest U.S. Team members were Jacob Heilveil, who finished fourteenth (1:32:32), and Scot Hollonbeck, right behind him in fifteenth place (1:32:33).

Columbus Marathon
On October 21, 2001, the 21st running of the Columbus Marathon wheelchair race featured a field of more than 16 participants. Despite the rescheduling of the National Wheelchair 10k to the same day due to the September 11 attacks, the Columbus Marathon was still able to draw a competitive—if not surprising—field.
One of the surprises was Scot Hollonbeck (Atlanta), who showed up at the last minute. Renowned wheelchair racer Candace Cable made the trip to Columbus to commentate for the wheelchair portion of the Ohio News Network's live broadcast of the marathon. Posting a winning time of 1:32:38, Hollonbeck missed by a little over a minute the event's male wheelchair record (1:31:34) Krige Schabort set in 1998. Another Columbus favorite, Holly Koester, won her second back-to-back female wheelchair title (3:01:56).
