:: TRAINING TIP ::
Being active and healthy is not limited to the able-bodied. In fact, it’s even more important that wheelchair users remain active. Here are a few simple things to consider when searching for a fitness center.

Where is the closest transportation?
Is the entrance wheelchair accessible?
Are locker rooms, rest rooms, and shower areas accessible?
Do they have the specific features you are looking for? Pool lifts, handcycles, or other equipment?
What are the fitness instructor’s qualifications? Do they have experience training people with disabilities?

Having a disability is not a limitation. Search your local city or state run parks and recreation department to find fitness accessible locations near you, and get in the game.

Paraplegic race-car driver Ray Paprota drove his way into the NASCAR history books when he competed in the NASCAR Goody's Dash Series Georgia Pacific 150 at Atlanta Motor Speedway on October 25, 2002, reportedly becoming the first wheelchair user to race in a NASCAR-sanctioned event. Paprota first began racing stock cars five years ago when he modified a Legends Series car and competed throughout the Southeast. Read about his groundbreaking NASCAR experience in the March 2003 SPORTS 'N SPOKES, along with reports on Utah's Huntsman Cup Alpine Race, where 61 elite and junior physically disabled athletes from around the world enjoyed the pulse-pounding excitement of ski racing, and the 24th World Armwrestling Federation Championships—the first world championships with a disabled team from the U.S.A.

In a tight match for the 24th World Armwrestling Federation Championships gold medal, Paul Taylor (left) outmuscled Roger Clowers for the top prize in the right-handed 133-165-lb class.
