Thrills—And More!

New events bring new challenges to the 21st National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic.

About this time every spring, a "veterans' reunion" takes place in Snowmass Village, Colo., at the National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic, co-sponsored by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). Held April 1-6, this year's clinic— "Miracles on the Mountainside"—continued to inspire old and new veterans alike to take their rehabilitation to a higher level, growing stronger physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially; rediscovering their abilities; and fostering a can-do attitude.

The event is not about competition and winning; rather, it is all about soaking in the whole experience of the week, relishing countless moments of growth and discovery, and seizing all the opportunities the event offers.

"The clinic is recreation therapy at the highest level, using adaptive skiing as the method to promote healthy, happy, and rewarding lives," according to VA's Sandy Trombetta, Winter Sports Clinic director. "This week's ride of discovery in this beautiful setting makes you think that perhaps Mother Nature is the greatest teacher of all."

Along with the traditional and popular skiing events, educational sessions, outings, and other activities such as scuba diving, the 21st clinic introduced several new sports to participants, literally offering something for everyone who took advantage of the event's challenges and opportunities.

Read more about the events at this year's gathering which, for the first time, held clinics in curling and the biathlon.
