To the Ends of the Earth

Friday, November 1, 2002 - 12:00am

In Antarctic expedition explores some of the world's most intriguing—and previous inaccessible—locations.

The Antarctic Peninsula rises into the Atlantic Ocean—a part of the Andes mountain range and the Great White Continent. Antarctica is the highest, coldest place on the planet, holding 90% of the earth's ice and 68% of the world's fresh water. Photo by Adam Rothberg.
"My goal is to triumph over obstacles," says Challenge Aspen cofounder and Special Projects Director Amanda Boxtel. "Antarctica seemed to be the ultimate challenge for anyone, let alone someone with a physical limitation. What contrast, what irony—a place displaying all the possibilities of life and all the perils. Here was the attraction."

In the November 2002 SPORTS 'N SPOKES, read Boxtel's account of her unforgettable adventure in one of the few unspoiled places left on Earth—a complex interaction of flora, fauna, ice, wind, and waves, free of cell phones, pagers, television, and car alarms.
